Message from the Founder Director - Jigsaw Announcement

In October, Headstrong - the National Centre for Youth Mental Health received one million Euro from the HSE to open six new Jigsaw sites in Donegal, Offaly, Clondalkin, Tallaght, North Fingal and Dublin 15. The funding was first announced in Budget 2011 in December 2010. This will allow Headstrong to replicate its already successful Jigsaw model which creates safe spaces in communities where young people can access a wide range of mental health supports for free.

Jigsaw - Step One

 

This month saw a flurry of activity in the newly selected Jigsaw sites with several research teams dispatched by Headstrong for the needs and resource analysis process. Each site did trojan work in pulling together and gathering their local resources to facilitate this process, particularly in the tight timeframe that was given to them.

My World

 

Data collection for the first national study on youth mental health has been completed by UCD School of Psychology and Headstrong. More than 15,000 young people aged 12 to 25 years have been surveyed on their mental health and wellbeing.

Think Big Music Event

 

To celebrate World Mental Health Week, more than 40 young people explored the connection between music and mental health at a one-day workshop in Dublin's famous Windmill Lane Studios on Saturday 15th October. The role that music plays in providing a support or release for young people is critical according to new research from Headstrong.

Rugby stars support Think Big

 

Irish rugby stars Brian O'Driscoll, Paul O'Connell and Johnny Sexton have become mentors to young people participating in Think Big. Think Big is a programme designed by O2 and Headstrong to enable young people to do projects in their community that will make a difference to theirs and to other's mental health. As project mentors, the rugby stars will host workshops to help the young people bring their project ideas to life. The workshops will focus on a range of different areas including how to stay motivated to ensure the project is as successful as it can possibly be.

Shannon RFC support Think Big

 

Irish rugby star Jerry Flannery joined fellow Shannon Rugby Football Club players Stephen Keogh and Mossy Lawlor in Thomond Park recently to launch to club's new jersey. This will now feature the Think Big logo, in conjunction with O2.

James Vincent McMorrow donates to Headstrong

 

Silver Lining, our charity album in conjunction with the Sound Training Centre, went on sale in May 2011 and has become a huge success for both of us. The album won the Audio/Music production category in The Digital Hub's Best in Show 2011 Awards. James Vincent McMorrow's cover of Steve Winwood's hit 'Higher Love' from the album now features on Amazon's LOVEFILM.com advertisement.

Liam's Epic Bike Ride

 

Dublin Liam Doyle takes off on his Epic Bike Ride - an expedition from Auckland in New Zealand to Tokyo in Japan in aid of Headstrong this December. The total distance covered will be around 15,000km with about 9,000km covered by bicycle. Liam writes "for a long time I've dreamed of taking on a significant physical challenge and after climbing Mount Blanc last year the time has come to hit the road and put myself to the test on a bike. I'm sure this will add to the demands and the excitement of the undertaking."

International Charity Bazaar Sunday November 13th

 

The world will convene in Dublin for one day at the 6th annual International Charity Bazaar when the diplomatic corps based in Ireland gets together at a unique multicultural, festival bazaar to raise money for charity. Headstrong has been chosen as one of the six Irish charities that will benefit from monies raised on the day.

Day of Mindfulness

 

More than 50 young people from all over Ireland took part in a Day of Mindfulness on Saturday 5th November with monks from Plum Village in France. The event organised by the National Youth Advisory Panel was held at the Wisdom Centre on Cork Street in Dublin.

Mental Health Submission

 

A joint submission from Headstrong and a sub-group of our Youth Advisory Panel - Aoife Price, Tim Smyth and Ruth Baker - was presented to the Department of Health on the Review of the Mental Health Act 2001.

 

 

 
 
 

Headstrong present at National One Day Research Conference on Youth Mental Health

 

The Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Special Interest Group in Youth Mental Health hosted a major national research conference in the Royal College of Surgeons on October 14th. This research conference marked the launch of the International Declaration of Youth Mental Health. The conference was formally opened by Kathleen Lynch TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health with responsibility for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People.
