Below are a number of organisations and online supports that you can access for help today.

Mental health

Aware – Helping to Defeat Depression (www.aware.ie)

Aware is a national voluntary organisation providing support through depression. Services include support groups nationwide, a loCall Helpline open 365 days a year, email support services. All services are available to individuals who experience depression and also concerned family members and friends.

Bodywhys - The Eating Disorders Association of Ireland (www.bodywhys.ie)

Bodywhys is the national organisation dedicated to offering support, information & understanding for people affected by eating disorders including family & carers. The helpline offers a non-judgemental and confidential support and information service. Bodywhys also offers support groups, an online support group and email support.

Childline is a 24-hour service for children and young people up to 18 years of age. Childline is open 365 days a year (even Christmas Day!). It offers support to every young people living in Ireland through the Childline listening service over the phone.

GROW is a Mental Health Organisation which helps people who have suffered, or are suffering, from mental health problems. Members are helped to recover from all form of breakdown, or indeed, to prevent such happening. GROW’s principal strength is the support members give each other from their own experience in matters to do with mental health.

Pieta House – Centre for the Prevention of Self-Harm or Suicide is a focused, counselling service which is readily accessible to those who need it. Together with you, they help you identify reasons to live.

Samaritans provides confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide.

They offer their service by telephone, email, letter and face to face in most of their branches.

Shine is the national organisation dedicated to upholding the rights and addressing the needs of all those affected by enduring mental illness including, but not exclusively, schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder and bi-polar disorder.

Teenline Ireland is a national helpline for teenagers feeling fed-up, alone, distressed, worried or just want to talk. Teen-Line provides a listening and support service and will provide you with information about other support services in your area.

This website aims to raise awareness on a range of personal issues and use technology to connect people together to better deal with their issues. The website is part of a support community which includes forums, blogs, useful assistance, useful information, weekly podcasts that discuss a range of issues and useful numbers and further assistance

Mentalhealth-support is an organisation created to help families, care givers and those suffering and affected by psychosis.

Alateen is for young people, aged twelve to twenty, who are affected by a problem drinker.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

Alcohol Action Ireland is a national charity for alcohol related issues. Their vision is of an Ireland that recognises and challenges the harm caused by alcohol.

Self-help organisation holding regular meetings around the country.

Gamblers Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who have joined together to do something about their own gambling problem and to help other compulsive gamblers do the same.

Merchants Quay Ireland is a voluntary organisation providing a wide range of services to people who are homeless and for drug users.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a non-profit fellowship of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. A group of recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean.

Console supports and helps people bereaved through suicide. Console promotes positive mental health within the community in an effort to reduce the high number of attempted suicides and deaths through suicide. Their services include a national free phone helpline, individual & family counselling for people bereaved through suicide.

IFPA provides sexual and reproductive health information, crisis pregnancy counselling, clinical services, education and training. Through education programmes, clinics and information, they enable people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and to understand their rights.

Provide facilities, professional help and support to women and children suffering from violence in their home. Aoibhneas operates a 24 hour helpline service, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Ireland’s only parenting site for Dads and Dads to be. Dad.ie is a parenting website for dads & dads-to-be providing parenting advice & information on Pregnancy, Fatherhood, Money & Legal issues and Lifestyle & Health matters. The RIS offers a free, confidential and independent information, advice, referral and advocacy service for people seeking asylum in Ireland, for those in need of protection, for people with refugee status and for those with permission to remain in Ireland.

SPIRASI (www.spirasi.ie)

SPIRASI works with asylum seekers, refugees and other disadvantaged migrant groups, with special concern for survivors of torture. In partnership with others, SPIRASI enables access to specialist services to promote the well-being of the human person, and encourages self-reliance and integration into Ireland.

Getting Professional Support

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing mental health difficulties, it can help to talk to a professional. The first point of professional contact for a young person is usually his/her local GP. Your GP is there to listen to your concerns, to offer you information, support and advice. If you could benefit from accessing another service, your GP can help you to do so by providing an onward referral.
